A Correspondence Principle for Scission-Induced Stress Relaxation in Elastomeric Components
نویسندگان
چکیده
A method is presented for calculating the stress relaxation due to scission in elastomeric components that operate at a fixed deformation while at an elevated temperature. A relationship is established between stresses at different temperatures that is called the correspondence principle for scission/healing materials. Two examples involving cylinders illustrate its use. The first example involves combined tension-torsion, for which an axial force-twisting moment relation is derived, that might be useful in experimental studies to assess the applicability of the correspondence principle. The second example provides a criterion for estimating the lifetime of an annular seal. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1794701#

Torsion of an Elastomeric Cylinder Undergoing Microstructural Changes
Abstract. A constitutive theory which accounts for scission and cross linking processes in polymers during deformation is used to analyze the torsion of a circular bar. In each increment of deformation at a material element of the torsion bar, some volume fraction of material undergoes scission and then re-cross links to form a new network with a new reference state. The scission process reduce...
متن کاملRate-Dependent Fracture at Adhesive Interface
Schallamach’s theory of rate-dependent bond dissociation is used to understand the fracture of a polymerglass interface. The model system consists of an elastomeric film (20 μm thick) of poly(dimethylsiloxane), chemically bonded to a silanized glass substrate. The fracture energy of the interface varies logarithmically with velocity, which is consistent with Schallamach’s theory of forced bond ...
متن کاملNew Method for Predicting Lifetime of Seals from Compression-stress Relaxation Experiments
Interpretation of compression stress-relaxation (CSR) experiments for elastomers in air is complicated by (1) the presence of both physical and chemical relaxation and (2) anomalous diffusion-limited oxidation (DLO) effects. For a butyl material, we first use shear relaxation data to indicate that physical relaxation effects are negligible during typical high temperature CSR experiments. We the...
متن کاملInfluence of thermally induced scission and crosslinking on the post-scission inflation of circular elastomeric membranes
When an elastomeric material is deformed and subjected to temperatures above some characteristic value Tcr (near 100 C for natural rubber), macromolecular chains and crosslinks undergo scission, recoiling and re-crosslinking. The process depends on time and temperature and continues until the temperature decreases below Tcr. Compared to the virgin material, the new material system has modified ...
متن کاملCREEP AGE FORMING OF Al-Zn-Mg ALLOYS WITH OPTIMIZATION OF MECHANICALl PROPERTIES
Creep age forming (CAF) is one of the novel methods in aerospace industry that has been used to manufacture components of panels with improved mechanical properties and reduced fabrication cost. CAF is a combined age-hardening and stress-relaxation that are responsible for strengthening and forming, respectively. This paper deals with the experimental investigations of mechanical and springback...
